The Radlett Festival of Music was proud to present Music of the Spheres
28th March 2015 7.30pm Weston Auditorium, University of Hertfordshire
This gala concert celebrated the
amazing local school and amateur choirs in the Hertfordshire area, Featuring
Sir John Lawes, St George's and Beaumont School choirs and the hand bells from
St Columbas College, along with Carillon and Jubilate Chamber Choirs.
The
concert consisted entirely of music by Timothy Blinko, a composer, and Professor
of Music at the University of Hertfordshire. His music has appeared on
'Songs of Praise' and mixes beautiful melodies with amazing vocal writing.
Choirs really enjoy performing his music as it is very 'singable' (Blinko
has run a number of choirs and taught singing, so knows what singers enjoy and
can achieve).
Audiences love the
immediate effect of both a exquisite melodic line and also respond to the
influences behind his writing. For example, in the atmospheric 'Memorare'
Blinko introduces harmonics with a floating top C soprano line and in Anima he
asks the two soloists to slide around quarter tones and scores the piece for
resonating handbells. His piano piece 'Time Trace' is hypnotic, with its
repeated quaver movement throughout most of the piece representing the
fluctuations of time. The theme of the concert 'Music of the Spheres',
illustrates one of the influences on his compositions - the idea that the universe
contains planets each with their own sound and resonance, created during the
'Big Bang'.
This was an evening of delightful music
